SUMMARY: Sun V100 oracle client

Thanks to Tim Chipman for the only reply. He suggested checking the 
version of Java. Turns out the problem according to Oracle can be with 
the Java version or it could be two exports that have to be done.

In our case, our DBA got adventurous and used a different X client 
(Reflection X for windows 2K) and that fixed the problem. Very 
interesting...
