Summary: solaris password settings

Thanks to everyone who responded.

For setting the strong password requirements, mostly everyone suggested to
use "npasswd."
For cracking the weaker passwords which are already used on  the system, the
general advice was to use "Crack," "John the ripper" etc. programs.
BTW, I installed Crack 5.0 and it was kind of "cool" to find out how this
program cracks passwords.
To change the expiration date, warning date etc. currently I wrote a script
which calls "passwd -x #days -w #warn_days <ID>"

I will try to set the npasswd sometime.
